WTT Star Contender Brazil Enters Main Draw as Top Seeds Begin Campaigns

The 2026 WTT Star Contender Brazil continued on Thursday, July 23, as the tournament entered its third day with the start of the main draw at the Vale Sul Shopping event space in São José dos Campos.

The six-day competition, which runs from July 21 to July 26, has attracted many of the world's leading table tennis players. Competitors are battling not only for the title but also for valuable World Table Tennis ranking points, with the men's and women's singles champions set to earn 600 ranking points. The tournament also features a total prize fund of US$300,000.

Day 3 marks an important stage of the competition as the men's and women's singles Round of 48 gets underway. The opening round also includes the Round of 16 matches in the men's, women's and mixed doubles events, increasing the intensity as players compete across multiple categories.

Home supporters are closely following Brazil's Hugo Calderano, who begins his singles campaign as one of the tournament favourites. The world-class Brazilian arrives in excellent form after recently capturing the Americas Cup title and is expected to lead the host nation's challenge for silverware.

Brazil also has high hopes in the women's competition through Bruna Takahashi, who opens her campaign alongside a record national delegation of 49 athletes. The host country will be aiming to make the most of home advantage as it seeks success across the singles and doubles events.

The international field remains highly competitive. American star Kanak Jha, ranked No. 21 in the world, begins his men's singles challenge against a strong lineup that includes several leading Asian and European players.

Japan has also sent one of the strongest squads to the tournament. Hina Hayata and Satsuki Odo headline the women's singles field, while Shunsuke Togami and Yukiya Uda are among the leading contenders in the men's draw. Japanese players are also expected to feature prominently in the doubles competitions, with several seeded partnerships beginning their campaigns on Day 3.

The WTT Star Contender series continues to play an important role on the international calendar by offering players valuable ranking points ahead of major events later in the season. Strong performances in Brazil could significantly improve qualification prospects and world rankings for several competitors.

With the main draw now underway, attention will focus on whether the top seeds can justify their status or if the tournament will produce early surprises before the quarter-finals later this week.
