Posted : 22 July 2025

As the 2025 WTT Contender Championship begins at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, Wahid Oshodi, President of the Africa Table Tennis Federation, has confirmed that over 126 players will compete in the event, scheduled for July 22 to 26.

Oshodi made this announcement during a media briefing held in Lagos, emphasizing that the tournament aims to promote excellence and give top players a platform to compete and showcase their skills.

“The event will attract global talent and contribute to the sport’s growth and development worldwide,” Oshodi stated.

He highlighted that the competition will provide players with valuable experience and exposure to high-level matches, while also offering ranking points to help improve their global standings.

“It also serves as an opportunity for Nigerian players to test their skills against international stars and gain recognition,” he added.

Oshodi noted that the WTT Contender series is designed to introduce innovation and excitement into table tennis, enhancing the sport’s global appeal.

“Hosting this tournament will encourage new talents and provide a boost for the Nigerian table tennis ecosystem,” he said.

He also pointed out that Nigeria’s participation in such a high-profile event could attract increased investment and support for the sport nationwide.

“This could lead to better infrastructure, improved training programs, and more resources for athletes,” he explained.

Oshodi believes the WTT Contender will boost the popularity of table tennis in Nigeria and create new opportunities for players and stakeholders.

Kweku Tandoh, the Tournament Director, also affirmed their commitment to delivering a successful and competitive championship.

“Having top-ranked international players participate will enhance the tournament’s status and competitiveness,” he said.

“This WTT Contender Lagos is also critical for Olympic preparation, helping players sharpen their skills ahead of Paris 2028,” Tandoh added.

This year’s edition will feature a prize pool of $100,000, a significant increase from the $75,000 offered in the previous edition, further elevating the competition’s stakes and appeal.

The event promises to celebrate table tennis excellence, providing a global platform for athletes to shine. Among the top Nigerian players expected to feature are Taiwo Mati and Mathew Kuti.
