Women’s Rugby World Cup Enters Exciting Quarterfinal Stage

Posted : 12 September 2025

The 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup reaches the knockout phase this weekend, with four quarterfinal clashes promising high-stakes action. On Saturday, defending champions New Zealand face South Africa in Exeter, while Canada take on Australia in Bristol. Sunday shifts the focus to Europe, with France playing Ireland and hosts England going up against Scotland.

New Zealand vs South Africa

New Zealand enter the quarterfinals as clear favourites, with a record six World Cup titles to their name. They face a South African side making its first appearance at this stage, contrasting with the country’s history in men’s rugby. The Black Ferns come off a dominant 40-0 victory over Ireland, whereas South Africa were defeated 57-10 by France in their final pool match.

South Africa coach Swys de Bruin insisted that his team have nothing to lose, saying, “I think the pressure if you’re underdogs is on them. There’s nothing on us.” New Zealand boss Allan Bunting acknowledged South Africa’s physical style but emphasised that the Black Ferns are formidable in their own right.

Canada vs Australia

Canada, ranked second in the world, look set to continue their strong run against Australia. They previously beat the Wallaroos 45-7 in May during the Pacific Four Series and closed the group stage with a 40-19 win over Scotland. Australia, meanwhile, were heavily beaten 47-7 by England.

Canada captain Alex Tessier highlighted the balance of expectation and pressure: “Pressure is a privilege and we’re looking forward to a good battle on Saturday.” Australia coach Joanne Yapp, a former England captain, expressed pride in her team for reaching the quarterfinals and acknowledged their achievement despite the loss to England.

France vs Ireland

The France-Ireland matchup could be the most competitive of the weekend. France won 27-15 in their recent Women’s Six Nations encounter, but Ireland prop Linda Djougang emphasized the closeness of that game: “We came so close. We know the challenge ahead of us.” France appear to be hitting their stride at the right moment, with back Lina Queyroi stressing their intent to move the ball and physically challenge Ireland.

England vs Scotland

England face Scotland in a traditional rivalry that has been largely one-sided in recent decades. England have won 32 of their 34 encounters, with Scotland’s last victory dating back to 1989. Even without full-back Ellie Kildunne due to concussion, England are expected to dominate, while captain Zoe Aldcroft returns from injury.

Scotland coach Bryan Easson acknowledged the challenge but celebrated his team’s progress, noting they are ranked among the top six in the world. England forwards coach Louis Deacon warned, “Knockout rugby is a different competition. You have to earn the right, you have to earn another week,” highlighting the stakes of the quarterfinal stage.
