Women’s Invitational T20i: Nigeria show grit to edge South Africa in Super Over thriller

Posted : 26 March 2026

Nigeria’s women’s cricket team delivered a performance defined by resilience and mental strength, bouncing back from earlier disappointment to secure a dramatic Super Over victory against South Africa U-19 at the fifth Women’s Invitational T20I in Lagos.

Played at the historic Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval, the contest — part of the Patricia Kambarami Cup — evolved into one of the most gripping fixtures of the tournament, with Nigeria holding their nerve when it mattered most.

Nigeria could hardly have asked for a better start. Their bowlers struck immediately, dismantling South Africa’s top order with precision and discipline. Ashley Bernad fell for a duck in the opening over, while Jeze Campher followed soon after as scoring opportunities dried up.

At 2 for 2 and later 18 for 3 at the end of the powerplay, South Africa appeared in deep trouble. Nigeria’s control in the early overs reflected sharp execution and well-structured bowling plans.

However, the game shifted through the composure of captain Mieke Van Voorst. Her authoritative 69 off 47 balls steadied the innings and injected momentum back into South Africa’s campaign.

Supported by Siphokuhle Masilela (20) and Jae-Leigh Filander (16), South Africa recovered admirably to post 133 for 6 — a total that once seemed unlikely.

Nigeria’s response lacked early fluency. Openers Amusa Kehinde and Christabel Chukuonye struggled to accelerate, with Amusa departing for nine as the innings crawled to 47 for 1 at the halfway mark.

While Christabel (26) and Eguakun Omosigho (18) attempted to stabilise the innings, the required rate steadily climbed. South Africa regained the upper hand with timely breakthroughs, placing Nigeria under mounting pressure.

That tension was emphatically broken by captain Lucky Piety.

Her innings was the defining moment of the match — a fearless 66 off 35 balls that combined power, precision, and composure. A single over yielding 24 runs completely transformed the chase, swinging momentum back in Nigeria’s favour and dragging the game to a tie.

With the scores level, the contest moved into a Super Over, a fitting climax to an already tense encounter.

Nigeria managed 10 runs in their over, with Piety once again involved alongside Salome. It was then left to the bowlers to defend under pressure, and they responded with discipline, restricting South Africa to nine runs.

The narrow victory highlighted Nigeria’s composure in high-pressure moments and their growing confidence on the international stage.

Lucky Piety’s influence extended beyond her explosive batting. Her leadership and calmness in decisive moments proved instrumental, earning her the Player of the Match award.

Reflecting on her performance, she acknowledged the difficulty of the situation and credited both faith and teamwork for the turnaround.

This victory represents more than just a win; it signals Nigeria’s ability to compete strongly against quality opposition and recover from adversity within matches.

From early bowling dominance to a middle-order wobble and finally a captain’s rescue act, Nigeria showcased a complete narrative of grit, adaptability, and belief—qualities that could define their campaign as the tournament progresses.

The dramatic conclusion to this match reinforces Nigeria's reputation as a rising force in African women's cricket. By overcoming a formidable South African side in such a high-stakes scenario, the Yellow-Green have proven they possess the mental fortitude required for championship success. This result provides a significant boost to their aspirations as they move further into the competition.
