Wessels Leads South African Stroke Play Championship After First Round

Posted : 12 February 2025

Jordan Wessels took the lead after the first round of the South African Stroke Play Championship at Mossel Bay Golf Club, firing an impressive eight-under-par 64. His round included an eagle, nine birdies, and three bogeys, giving him a two-shot advantage over fellow South Africans Nelis de Bruin and Liam Ross, as well as Scotland's Gregor Tait.

Two other South Africans, Riaan Kotze and Logan Leisher, were tied for fifth, one shot behind, while Frenchman Noa Auch-Roy shared the spot as well.

Wessels, who returned to South Africa in January after a brief stint at the University of Nevada, described the course as "gettable" but acknowledged the tough holes that required attention.

He expressed satisfaction with his performance, especially the four consecutive birdies to finish his round, including a solid birdie on the difficult par-three 15th. Despite his strong start, Wessels remained grounded, acknowledging that there was still much golf to be played.

The day also featured standout performances from De Bruin, who made his debut in the tournament, and Gregor Tait. De Bruin, who had a solid round of 66, was pleased with his eagle on the 10th and seven birdies, including three consecutive on the first three holes.

Tait's round of 65 included five birdies on his outward nine and an eagle on the fifth. With 18 players under three-under-par, including international competitors, Wessels knows that his lead is not insurmountable and will focus on taking each round day by day.
