Vuyisani Makama Embracing Professional Golf Challenge as He Settles Into the Ranks

South African golfer Vuyisani Makama believes he is gradually finding his rhythm in the professional game after making the transition from amateur golf earlier this year. The 19-year-old has already gained valuable experience through appearances on both the Betway Big Easy Tour and the Sunshine Tour, where he has begun adjusting to the demands of elite competition.

Reflecting on his first few months as a professional, Makama highlighted the increased standard of play as the biggest difference compared to amateur events. He noted that professionals demonstrate greater consistency, requiring players to maintain a high level of performance week after week.

The young golfer admitted that nerves played a role during his first tournaments as a professional. Beyond competing against stronger fields, he has also had to adapt to the realities of life on tour, including managing travel expenses and handling new responsibilities. Despite the challenges, Makama views the experience as an important learning process that is helping him grow both on and off the course.

Makama has split his schedule between the Betway Big Easy Tour and the Sunshine Tour, with most of his appearances coming in the latter. While he acknowledges there is still significant room for improvement, he remains focused on learning from every event and developing the habits needed to succeed at the professional level.

According to Makama, one of the major differences between amateur and professional golf is the scoring standard required to remain competitive. He explained that scores which might comfortably make the cut in amateur tournaments are often not enough in professional events, where players generally need under-par rounds to stay in contention.

The Soweto-born golfer said his decision to turn professional at a relatively young age was motivated by a desire to gain experience early. He believes the additional time competing against seasoned professionals will help him adapt more quickly, learn from mistakes, and establish himself in the sport.

Makama will continue his development this week when he tees it up in the fourth Betway Big Easy Tour event of the season at Glenvista Country Club. Having played the course previously, he hopes familiarity with the layout will help him build confidence while continuing to strengthen the mental side of his game.

Looking ahead, Makama’s immediate goal is to secure his Sunshine Tour status and create a strong foundation for future seasons. The Betway Big Easy Tour, which serves as the official developmental circuit for the Sunshine Tour, remains an important platform for emerging players seeking to progress through the professional ranks.
