Vuelta a España Stage Three Abandoned After Severe Hailstorm

The third stage of the 2026 Vuelta a España was called off on Monday after an intense hailstorm struck the French Pyrenees, forcing riders and race officials to halt the event with around 15 kilometres remaining. The 174km route was scheduled to take the peloton from Gruissan to Font-Romeu.

The dramatic weather change occurred as the riders climbed the Col de Mont-Louis. Heavy rain quickly developed into a powerful hailstorm, covering parts of the road and making it unsafe for the cyclists to continue.

Race leader Tadej Pogacar was among those who reacted to the worsening conditions, signalling for the main group to stop. Riders subsequently sought shelter at a nearby hotel and other buildings while organisers assessed whether racing could resume.

Organisers ultimately decided that the stage could not safely restart. As a result, there was no stage winner, no podium ceremony and no official stage result, while Pogacar retained the overall lead.

Pogacar had taken the red jersey by winning Saturday's opening time trial, before Britain's Matt Brennan claimed Sunday's second stage in a sprint finish. The cancellation means the riders will now turn their attention to Tuesday's fourth stage in Andorra, a short but demanding mountain route starting and finishing in Andorra la Vella.
