Vollering Defends Vuelta Femenina Title with Dominant Final Stage Win

Posted : 10 May 2025

Demi Vollering successfully defended her Vuelta Femenina title by powering to victory on the final stage, capping off a dominant week in Spain. The Dutch cyclist launched a decisive attack in the final kilometre of the mountainous stage seven, soloing to the finish at the Alto de Cotobello and sealing both the stage win and the overall title.

With a 45-second lead going into the day, her commanding ride stretched the final gap to one minute and one second over Switzerland's Marlen Reusser.

Vollering’s performance was bolstered by a strong showing from her FDJ-Suez teammates, allowing her to control the race and secure victory in both of the event’s mountain stages.

The 28-year-old took hold of the leader’s red jersey earlier in the race with a win on Thursday’s climbing stage, and she credited her team's support for maintaining that momentum. “I’m really happy about the whole performance with the whole team,” Vollering said after the race, expressing satisfaction with their consistent dominance.

Former teammate Anna van der Breggen, returning to racing after a brief retirement, was also in contention and led much of the final 10.3km climb under rainy conditions.

However, she couldn’t respond to Vollering’s late surge and was overtaken by Reusser, ultimately finishing third overall, 1:16 behind the winner. Despite the setback, Van der Breggen’s presence on the podium marked a strong comeback to the sport.

Vollering’s triumph adds a third major tour title to her résumé, following her 2023 Tour de France Femmes win and previous Vuelta title. The race was dominated by Dutch riders throughout, with every individual stage taken by a Dutchwoman.

Marianne Vos secured victories on stages two and six, Van der Breggen claimed stage four, Femke Gerritse won stage three, and Lidl-Trek opened the event with a team time trial win, making it a memorable edition for Dutch cycling.
