South Africa’s women’s team delivered a composed all-round performance to secure a 28-run victory over Zimbabwe in the ongoing fifth Nigeria Women’s Invitational T20I tournament at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos.
The encounter, part of the Patricia Kambarami Cup, lived up to expectations as both sides battled intensely, but South Africa’s discipline with both bat and ball ultimately proved decisive.
After winning the toss, South Africa opted to set a target and got off to a promising start through Chanel Venter and Ashley Barnard. The duo laid a solid foundation, each contributing 16 runs as the team raced to 62 at the end of the powerplay.
Zimbabwe, however, responded with a timely fightback, dismantling the middle order. The quick dismissals of Venter and skipper Mieke Van Voorst triggered a collapse that saw South Africa slump to 82 for five midway through the innings.
Despite the setback, a crucial late partnership restored momentum. Miya Lalor and Daneli Boshoff steadied the innings, with Boshoff’s brisk 25 off 17 balls lifting South Africa to a competitive total of 145 for seven in their 20 overs.
Zimbabwe’s bowling effort was led by Salem Museka and Tadiwa Garutsa, who claimed two wickets apiece to keep their side in contention.
Chasing 146, Zimbabwe struggled to build early momentum after losing a wicket with just four runs on the board. South Africa’s bowlers maintained tight lines, limiting scoring opportunities and applying constant pressure.
By the halfway stage, Zimbabwe had crawled to 56 for two, and although they showed flashes of resistance, the required run rate continued to climb.
Ashley Van Wyk emerged as the standout performer with the ball, delivering a match-winning spell of three for 17. She was well supported by Kananelo Mokoena, who picked up two wickets for 15 runs.
Zimbabwe’s hopes rested largely on Christina Mutasa, who top-scored with 35 runs, while Lorraine Pemhiwa chipped in with 18. However, their efforts were not enough as the team finished on 117 for eight in 20 overs.
Van Wyk’s impressive contribution earned her the Player of the Match award, capping a dominant outing for South Africa in Lagos.
South Africa's victory underlines their status as a formidable force in the fifth Nigeria Women’s Invitational T20I tournament. By successfully defending their total through disciplined bowling and sharp fielding, they have sent a clear message to their rivals in the competition. This performance sets a high standard for the remaining fixtures as the race for the Kambarami Cup intensifies in Lagos.
