Ulrich Van Den Berg seized the opportunity presented by ideal conditions at Dainfern Golf Club, carding a second-round 66 to move to 10-under for the tournament, establishing a two-shot lead going into the final round. The seasoned golfer expressed his satisfaction with his performance, highlighting his solid ball striking and excellent driving as key factors in his success.
He also praised the course conditions, particularly the greens, which he compared to those used on the Sunshine Tour in Zimbabwe, calling them among the best he’s ever played on.
Van Den Berg started his second round at the 10th hole and played conservatively, making five straight pars. He then hit a strong streak of three consecutive birdies, turning in a bogey-free 33. After a bogey on the first hole of the back nine, he quickly bounced back with a birdie, maintaining his momentum.
A series of three pars followed, leading to another trio of birdies on holes six, seven, and eight before finishing with a par on the ninth to complete a round of six-under 66.
England’s Joe Sullivan, South Africa’s Drikus Joubert, and Musiwalo Nethunzwi, representing the Papwa Sewgolum Class, are tied for second place at eight-under. Sullivan, despite a bogey and double bogey, managed to recover with a 67.
Joubert followed up his opening 68 with another solid round of 68, while Nethunzwi’s 70 was enough to secure a place in the chase. Andrew Williamson and Brandon Gildenhuys are tied for fifth at seven-under, while Oliver Goldhill, Ryan Tipping, Richard Joubert, and Haydn Porteous round out the top 10 at six-under.
The final round of this 54-hole event is set to be a thrilling showdown, with at least 10 players in contention for the title. This event is part of the Betway Big Easy Tour, a feeder circuit for the Sunshine Tour, which enjoys backing from iconic figures like Ernie Els and other influential patrons.
