Nigeria’s senior men’s cricket team, the Yellow Greens, launched their West Africa Trophy campaign in style, riding on a classy all-round display from Prosper Useni to secure a 19-run win over Zambia in Abuja.
Despite losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Nigeria posted a competitive total of 138 for 8 in 20 overs.
The backbone of the innings came from the Okpe brothers, whose 58-run partnership steadied the hosts. Isaac Okpe led with 35 runs, supported by Sylvester Okpe’s composed 23. Contributions from Isaac Danladi (27) and Salau Selim (17) added depth, while the lower order chipped in just enough to push the total beyond Zambia’s reach.
Nigeria’s defense of 139 was where the Yellow Greens truly stamped their authority. Useni, Vincent Adewoye, and Isaac Okpe combined to claim all 10 Zambian wickets, maintaining relentless pressure throughout the chase.
Useni stole the show with four wickets at an exceptional economy rate of 3.50, earning him the MVP award. Adewoye matched his wicket tally but bowled at a slightly higher economy of 6.00.
In the other fixture of the day, Rwanda surged to the top of the table after a dominant seven-wicket win over Sierra Leone, who were bowled out for just 47.
With both Nigeria and Rwanda sitting on two points, the Yellow Greens occupy second place with a net run rate of 0.950.
Nigeria now turn their attention to Sierra Leone, whom they face on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the NCF Pitch in Abuja as they aim to build on their opening-day momentum.
