Fog disrupts US Open opening round at Shinnecock Hills

Posted : 18 June 2026

The opening round of the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in New York was brought to an early halt on Thursday after thick fog made playing conditions unsafe. Tournament officials suspended play just 30 minutes after the first groups had begun their rounds, leaving much of the field waiting to start.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) stopped play at 7:05 a.m. local time, with only 18 golfers having teed off before visibility deteriorated. Organisers were forced to pause the action until conditions improved, creating uncertainty for players and spectators alike.

Among those yet to begin their rounds when play was suspended were former champion Rory McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy, the 2011 US Open winner, was scheduled to play alongside Ryder Cup teammates Tommy Fleetwood and Ludvig Åberg in one of the tournament's most anticipated groups.

Scheffler, who is aiming to complete the career Grand Slam with victory this week, is paired with defending champion J. J. Spaun. Their tee time was set shortly after McIlroy’s group.

Later in the day, recent US PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai was due to begin his challenge alongside fellow major champions Collin Morikawa and Jason Day.

Another high-profile grouping features 2022 US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, two-time winner Bryson DeChambeau, and Norway’s Viktor Hovland. Former champions Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth, and Jon Rahm are also scheduled to play later, along with Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre.

Tournament officials will look to resume play as soon as weather conditions allow, with a packed schedule ahead for the remainder of the opening round.
