The University of Maiduguri (UniMai) athletes have continued their outstanding performances at the ongoing 27th Nigerian University Games (NUGA), held in Jos, Plateau State.
In the male handball event, UniMai recorded a hard-fought victory over Justum University, narrowly edging them out 16–15 in a thrilling contest.
The university’s judo team also impressed, with Promise Ojikpe winning gold in the –63 kg category and Hauwa Ishaku claiming bronze in the +78 kg heavyweight division.
In basketball, the male team advanced to the quarterfinals following a series of dominant performances in the preliminary rounds.
The tennis team maintained their winning momentum, defeating Gombe State University in the men’s doubles to secure a spot in today’s quarterfinals. In the men’s singles, UniMai’s representatives triumphed over the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, with Rubi Toba Kefas defeating Caleb Kayo of the Nigerian Army University, Biu, to advance to the quarterfinals. However, Blessing Onah recorded a mixed result, defeating Gombe State University’s representative before losing to Priye Maxwell of the University of Port Harcourt.
The Taekwondo and Judo teams also contributed to the university’s medal haul. The female Poomsae team earned a bronze, while UniMai secured gold in the 62 kg female category and bronze in the +87 kg male division.
Overall, the University of Maiduguri continues to demonstrate excellence, determination, and team spirit across all events at the 27th NUGA Games.
