Captain Michael Chidi (MC) Ukaegbu's inauguration as captain of the Bonny Island Golf Club (BIGC) and his 50th birthday were celebrated in grand style with a successful two-day golf championship that attracted more than 120 golfers from across Nigeria.
The Captain Ukaegbu Inaugural Golf Tournament and 50th Birthday Championship combined competitive golf with celebration, bringing together club members, visiting golfers, sponsors, and stakeholders in an event widely praised for its organisation and atmosphere.
Among the standout performers was Adebowale Oyelahan, who emerged as champion in the Men's Division One category with a net score of 70, edging Wilson Sapele on countback. Murtala Saleh claimed the Men's Best Gross award and finished third overall with a net score of 71.
Speaking after his victory, Oyelahan described the triumph as a special achievement.
"It is a special feeling to win a tournament organised to celebrate Captain MC Ukaegbu's milestone birthday and inauguration as captain of the club," he said.
He credited discipline, preparation, and consistency for his success, while commending the organisers for delivering a highly competitive and memorable championship.
In the Men's Division Two category, Oludare Oyegbami secured first place with a 73 net, ahead of Temitayo Ogunjoju and Sonny Fombo, who returned scores of 75 and 77 net respectively.
The ladies' categories were dominated by former BIGC Lady Captain Nnenna Ahube, who won Ladies Division One with an impressive 66 net and also claimed the Ladies Overall Best Gross title with a score of 84 gross.
Ahube praised the quality of organisation and highlighted the significance of the turnout.
"The attendance reflected the goodwill and respect he enjoys within and outside the club," she said of Captain Ukaegbu.
She added that the tournament promoted friendship, healthy competition, and unity among participants.
Fortune LongJohn won the Ladies Division Two category with a 33 net, while Bessie Obei and newly inaugurated BIGC Lady Captain Marytina Osuchukwu finished second and third respectively.
Stephen Oniavi emerged as the winner of the Guest Men category with a 74 net, while Abigail Ikuifisile topped the Guest Ladies division with a 65 net.
Technical prize winners included John Tobi Olorundare (Men's Nearest-to-the-Pin), Isua Archibong (Straightest Drive), Lucy Eyo (Ladies Straightest Drive), and Eric Tay-Brown and Chinyelu Komori, who won the Longest Drive awards.
Reflecting on the event, Osuchukwu described the tournament as a fitting celebration of Ukaegbu's inauguration and golden jubilee.
"The turnout, organisation, and level of participation clearly demonstrated the unity and strength of our club," she said.
She also pledged the support of the ladies' section towards the continued growth of golf and increased female participation at the club.
At the closing ceremony, Ukaegbu expressed gratitude to members, guests, sponsors, volunteers, and the organising committee for their contributions to the success of the championship.
"I am overwhelmed by the support, goodwill, and love shown to me by members, friends, and guests who travelled from different parts of the country to celebrate with us," he said.
