Lorena Wiebes Dominates Opening Stage to Win Stage 1 of the 2026 UAE Tour Women

The 2026 UAE Tour Women kicked off in style on Day 1, as Dutch sprinter Lorena Wiebes delivered a commanding performance to win the opening stage and claim the first red leader’s jersey of the race. The 111‑kilometre route from Al Mirfa to Madinat Zayed saw teams battle crosswinds and tactical shifts, but it ultimately came down to a high‑speed sprint finish, where Wiebes proved unbeatable.

Wiebes, riding for Team SD Worx‑Protime, outpaced her rivals in the final dash to the line, finishing ahead of Lara Gillespie of UAE Team ADQ and Zoe Bäckstedt of Canyon‑SRAM. Her victory cements her status as one of the premier sprinters in women’s cycling and gives her a strong start in the UCI Women’s WorldTour event.

The stage featured several tense phases, especially in the middle section where teams worked to control the race and protect their sprinters from the effects of wind and positioning battles. Wiebes later reflected that the hectic nature of first sprint stages makes early pressure a key factor, and her team’s early lead‑out proved decisive.
