UAE-Based Star Jayeola Backs Bright Future for Nigerian Volleyball

Posted : 20 June 2026

Nigeria international and Al-Wasl Volleyball Club of the UAE player AbdulQuadri Jayeola has expressed strong confidence in the future of volleyball in Nigeria, pointing to noticeable improvements in the domestic league and the rise of talented players capable of competing on the international stage.

Jayeola made the remarks while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the ongoing Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Abuja.

The UAE-based star commended the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his contributions to the development and growth of volleyball in Nigeria. He noted that the league has improved significantly in recent years, particularly in terms of player welfare and competitiveness.

According to him, the standard of play has risen, and athletes are now better supported, which has contributed to a more competitive environment across the league.

“The league is far better compared to years back. All the players are well taken care of and the standards are high. The players are competing,” Jayeola said.

He added that the efforts of the Customs leadership have been widely appreciated within the volleyball community.

“They are all thanking the CG of Customs for the work he’s doing. So I think it’s much better than before,” he added.

Having returned to Nigeria after three years abroad, Jayeola said he was impressed by the progress made within the Nigeria Volleyball Federation and the quality of talent currently on display in the domestic league.

“There are a lot of improvements in the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, so I’m really excited to be here once again after three years,” he stated.

While acknowledging that there is still room for improvement, he believes Nigerian volleyball is on the right trajectory and will soon compete more strongly with established leagues around the world.

“There is still a long way to go, but I believe we are going to get there very soon,” he said.

Jayeola also praised the depth of talent in the league, insisting that many players have the ability to perform excellently if given opportunities abroad.

“I’ve seen a lot of players here that I believe, if they go outside Nigeria, they are going to play very, very well,” he said.

He further encouraged young and aspiring volleyball players to develop genuine passion for the sport as the foundation for long-term success.

“The first thing is that they should love what they want to do because when I started playing, I loved volleyball. If they love the game, they will enjoy it and continue to improve,” Jayeola concluded.
