U-20 National Softball camp pens in Yenagoa

Posted : 21 April 2024

The national U-20 softball camp has opened in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, with about 150 players, 20 national team coaches, and a foreign coach in attendance.

The softball camp opened on the 11th and will end on the 24th of April 2024, with daily training sessions at the Samson Siasia Stadium.

Sir Braveman Wodi, Director of Sports at the Bayelsa State Sports Council, mentioned that the softball program aims to engage young girls, preventing them from getting involved in social vices, drug abuse, and unwanted pregnancies.

He emphasized that the purpose of the softball camp in Yenagoa is to groom talents for Nigeria's representation at the 2028 Olympics in the USA. He highlighted that it's a long-term project aimed at producing softball stars for the nation.

Sir Wodi explained that the softball camp includes top coaches from around the world and officials from the softball federation in Yenagoa. He stated that the program aligns with Bayelsa government's policy of providing equal opportunities for all sports.

He mentioned that bringing the camp to Bayelsa was influenced by the state's success in softball at the last National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State, and to introduce young girls to the sport.

The Director stated that the camp will move to another state every six months to discover more talents, ensuring that the players are matured before the 2028 Olympics.

Twenty-five states, each represented by four players, except for host Bayelsa, which has more, are currently participating in the weeks-long exercise in Yenagoa.
