U-18 Hockey5s Africa Cup: Nigeria signs off with double bronze in Nairobi

Nigeria’s U-18 men’s and women’s hockey teams ended their campaign at the inaugural U18 Hockey5s Youth Africa Cup in Nairobi, Kenya, with bronze medals in both categories.

The women’s team secured its podium finish after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Ghana in the third-place match, while the men produced an emphatic 15-2 victory over hosts Uganda to also claim bronze.

Nigeria’s women showed consistency throughout the competition, recording group-stage victories against South Africa, Uganda and Ghana.

They were unable to progress to the final but quickly recovered to defeat Ghana for a second time in the tournament and secure third place.

The men also enjoyed a productive campaign, holding South Africa to a 7-7 draw before recording victories over Ghana and Uganda.

They completed their campaign in emphatic fashion, overwhelming Uganda 15-2 to finish among the top three teams.

The competition, held from Aug. 6 to 8, also served as Africa’s qualification tournament for the inaugural FIH Youth Hockey5s World Cup.

Only the top two teams in the men's and women's competitions earned tickets to the global championship, leaving Nigeria just short of qualification despite its double podium finish.

Nevertheless, the performances in Nairobi provided valuable international exposure for the country's emerging hockey players and demonstrated Nigeria's competitiveness in the fast-growing Hockey5s format.

The National Sports Commission congratulated the players, coaches and officials of both teams for their determination and impressive performances at the continental championship.

The double bronze finish is expected to provide a strong foundation for further development of Nigeria's junior hockey programme as the country continues to nurture players capable of competing at the highest international level.
