Twenty Countries Confirm Participation for 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos

Posted : 20 July 2026

Twenty countries have officially confirmed their participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships, which will be held in Lagos from August 9 to 14.

The Commonwealth Fencing Federation announced that host nation Nigeria will be joined by Australia, Bangladesh, Botswana, Cyprus, England, Ghana, Guernsey, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, The Gambia, Togo, and Wales for the six-day competition.

The championship will feature contests across the veteran, U-23, para, and senior categories. Athletes will compete in the three fencing disciplines of epee, foil, and sabre as they battle for Commonwealth honours.

India is set to arrive with the largest delegation at the tournament. The Asian nation has registered 67 fencers, underlining its ambition to challenge for multiple medals across the various categories.

The event is expected to attract many of the Commonwealth's leading fencers and provide a high level of competition throughout the championship. It also offers valuable ranking opportunities and international exposure for emerging athletes.

For Nigeria, hosting the championships represents another significant milestone in the country's efforts to develop fencing and strengthen its reputation as a destination for major international sporting events.

The competition will give Nigerian fencers the rare opportunity to test themselves against experienced opponents from across the Commonwealth without travelling abroad. Home support is also expected to provide an added advantage for the local athletes as they seek strong performances.

The Nigeria Fencing Federation has continued to invest in the sport through athlete development programmes and the hosting of international competitions. The Commonwealth Championships are expected to further increase public interest in fencing while inspiring more young Nigerians to take up the sport.

With competitors arriving from Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, the tournament promises six days of top-class fencing action and will serve as one of the biggest international fencing events ever staged in Nigeria.
