Tour de France Femmes Introduces Clothing Checks Amid Aerodynamics Controversy

Race organisers at the Tour de France Femmes Avec Zwift have introduced enhanced pre-race clothing inspections following allegations that some riders may be using extra padding to gain an aerodynamic advantage during time trials.

Officials are paying particular attention to competitors' outfits to ensure compliance with UCI regulations that prohibit non-essential items capable of altering a rider's body shape and improving performance.

The additional scrutiny follows reports that some teams raised concerns over riders using padding inside sports bras or other parts of their skinsuits to smooth airflow around the chest area.

Aerodynamics play a crucial role in cycling, particularly in individual time trials, where even marginal reductions in drag can translate into valuable seconds over the course of a race.

Experts have suggested that such modifications could save roughly one second per kilometre under certain conditions.

In response, race organiser ASO instructed riders to present both their bicycles and racing attire for inspection at least 10 minutes before their scheduled start time.

Officials said checks would focus on Article 1.3.032 of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) regulations, covering clothing, helmets, shoes, eyewear, communication devices and any other accessories that could unlawfully modify a rider's morphology.

The alleged practice, sometimes referred to as using a "chest fairing," has reportedly surfaced before in women's cycling, including during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

While the UCI has long banned artificial body-shape modifications, enforcing the rule has become increasingly complex because of the wide variety of sports bras and protective clothing used by female athletes.

Riders found to be in breach of the regulations risk severe penalties, including disqualification and financial sanctions.

Although the inspections have been welcomed by some teams as a step toward protecting fair competition, others have questioned how the checks will be carried out while respecting athletes' privacy and ensuring equal treatment across the sport.
