The final stage of this year’s Tour de France will feature a climb up the iconic Butte Montmartre, a location familiar from the 2024 Paris Olympic road race, organisers announced on Wednesday. This route, designed with inspiration from the Olympic course, is expected to bring a fresh twist to the race's conclusion.
The event last August had over 500,000 spectators, showcasing the grandeur of the hill and surrounding areas.
The Tour's riders will ascend Montmartre, passing beneath the famous Sacré-Cœur basilica, before racing towards a stage that could disrupt long-standing traditions in the event's history.
This year's finale will mark a departure from the usual finish on the Champs-Élysées, where the final sprint typically concludes the race. Since 1975, the Champs-Élysées has been the finishing line, except for 2024 when the race ended in Nice.
The race will begin on July 5 in Lille and conclude on July 27. Given the changes in the route, the traditional processional feel of the Champs-Élysées stage is likely to be replaced by a more dynamic and competitive end to this year's edition.
