Torrey Pines Tournament Joins PGA Tour Championship Series From 2028

Posted : 30 July 2026

The PGA Tour has confirmed that its annual tournament at Torrey Pines in California will become part of the new Championship Series when the revamped competition structure launches in 2028. The announcement marks another step in shaping the elite calendar that will feature the world's leading golfers.

The Championship Series, unveiled as part of a major overhaul of men's professional golf, is expected to include between 23 and 24 premier events running from February through August. The schedule will feature the four major championships, The Players Championship, the FedEx Cup playoff events, and team competitions such as the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. The Travelers Championship and a new tournament backed by Japanese insurer Sompo had already been confirmed for inclusion.

Tournament organizers also revealed that the Torrey Pines event will compete under the name The Sentry beginning with the January 2027 edition after securing a new title sponsor. Marty Gorsich, chief executive of the Century Club of San Diego, said the tournament's elevation to Championship Series status reflects its reputation for attracting world-class players to one of golf's most respected venues.

Originally launched as the San Diego Open in 1952, the tournament has been staged annually at Torrey Pines since 1968. Earlier this year, Justin Rose claimed the title with a tournament-record 23-under-par performance, winning by seven shots to secure his 13th PGA Tour victory and his second triumph at the iconic course.

Torrey Pines has long been one of the PGA Tour's landmark venues and has also hosted two U.S. Opens, including the unforgettable 2008 championship, where Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in a dramatic 19-hole playoff despite competing with a fractured leg.

The PGA Tour is expected to announce the remaining Championship Series events in the coming months. Alongside the elite circuit, a new Challenger Series featuring at least 20 tournaments will provide aspiring players with a pathway to the top tier through a promotion and relegation system.
