Tony Finau Withdraws from Grant Thornton Invitational Due to Knee Injury

Posted : 12 December 2024

Tony Finau withdrew from the Grant Thornton Invitational on Tuesday due to a knee injury, just two days before the combined PGA Tour and LPGA event in Naples, Florida. Finau was set to team up with women's world No. 1 Nelly Korda, with the pair having finished tied for fourth at the event last year. Instead, Daniel Berger will step in as an alternate to partner with Korda.

In a statement released by the PGA Tour, Finau expressed his disappointment about withdrawing from the tournament while continuing to recover from his knee injury. He reflected on his partnership with Korda in 2023, calling it one of the highlights of his year, and conveyed his eagerness to cheer for her this week. Finau also thanked Korda for her support as he focuses on regaining full health.

This is not the first time Finau has had to withdraw recently due to his knee issue. He also pulled out of last week’s Hero World Challenge in Nassau, Bahamas, citing the same injury. Despite ongoing rumors about a potential move to LIV Golf, Finau clarified that his absence was simply a result of resting his left knee, on which he underwent surgery in mid-October.

Looking ahead, Finau, 35, has stated that he will be "ready to rock and roll" for the PGA Tour’s season-opening event, The Sentry, which takes place from January 2-5 in Lahaina, Hawaii. Ranked No. 26 in the world, Finau had a strong 2023 season, finishing in the top 10 in five events, including a tie for second at the Houston Open and a tie for third at the US Open. He also secured his sixth career PGA Tour victory at the 2023 Mexico Open.
