Tommy Fleetwood clinches Dubai Invitational title with late birdies, edging out McIlroy and Lawrence

Posted : 15 January 2024

In a thrilling finale at the Dubai Invitational, Tommy Fleetwood secured victory with a birdie on the final two holes, finishing one shot ahead of Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence. McIlroy, who led by a shot going into the last hole, faced a dramatic turn as he hooked into the water, resulting in a bogey. Fleetwood capitalized on the opportunity, sinking a birdie putt to post a four-under 67 and conclude the tournament at 19 under.

The lead changed hands multiple times throughout the rollercoaster round, with Fleetwood initially holding a three-shot advantage after the first 10 holes. McIlroy mounted a comeback with birdies on the 11th, 12th, and 13th, drawing level with Fleetwood. However, a three-putt bogey on the 14th green set McIlroy back, and Fleetwood regained the lead with a birdie on the 17th. Both players birdied the 17th, but McIlroy's errant drive on the final hole led to a crucial bogey, opening the door for Fleetwood's triumph.

Reflecting on the performance, Fleetwood acknowledged McIlroy's exceptional play on the back nine but expressed satisfaction with his own solid game. Despite feeling in control, Fleetwood noted McIlroy's resilience, particularly after a setback on the 14th. McIlroy, playing his first tournament since November, viewed the week positively but acknowledged some costly mistakes, vowing to learn from them for the upcoming Dubai Desert Classic.

Fleetwood's victory at the Dubai Invitational showcased his composure and skill, capping off a competitive tournament that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
