Tom Hoge Leads After Opening Round at The Sentry in Hawaii

Posted : 03 January 2025

Tom Hoge took an early lead at The Sentry in Hawaii, kicking off the 2025 PGA Tour season with an impressive nine-under-par 64. The American holds a one-shot advantage over Will Zalatoris and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama after the first round. Hoge’s strong start featured four birdies in his first five holes, and he concluded the day with a total of 10 birdies, marred only by a single bogey on the sixth hole.

Hideki Matsuyama climbed the leaderboard with a stellar performance on the back nine, stringing together a birdie-eagle-birdie sequence. Meanwhile, Cameron Young, Collin Morikawa, and Canada’s Corey Conners sit two strokes behind Matsuyama, maintaining a competitive field early in the tournament. The event showcases some of the PGA Tour's top talent, setting the stage for an exciting season opener.

World number two Xander Schauffele, last year’s Open and PGA Championship winner, began his campaign with a modest one-under 72. Schauffele is the highest-ranked player participating in this event, which features 31 PGA Tour winners and 29 players who ranked in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings last season. Despite a slow start, Schauffele remains in contention as the tournament progresses.

Notably absent is world number one Scottie Scheffler, who dominated last season with nine victories, including a Masters triumph. Scheffler was forced to withdraw after undergoing hand surgery for an injury sustained while cooking over the holidays, leaving the field without its top-ranked player.
