Tim Merlier Clinches Record-Breaking Sixth Victory at UAE Tour

Posted : 21 February 2025

Tim Merlier claimed his sixth UAE Tour stage victory in record fashion, winning the fastest-ever stage of the Middle East’s only UCI WorldTour race at an average speed of 48.571 km/h. The race began with an aggressive move featuring Tadej Pogacar, Djordje Djuric, and defending champion Lennart Van Eetvelt, who broke away early and gained valuable seconds through Intermediate Sprints.

Pogacar and Van Eetvelt each secured a three-second advantage over their general classification rivals before the peloton reeled in the breakaway with 39 kilometers to go, setting the stage for a high-speed sprint finish.

A late crash just over three kilometers from the finish reduced the leading group, leaving Merlier to battle Green Jersey holder Jonathan Milan in the final meters. This time, the European Champion powered through to take the victory, while Matteo Malucelli edged Milan with a last-second bike throw to claim second place.

Following his strong performance, Pogacar was awarded the Red Jersey by H.E. Mariam Almheiri and Mr. Jacob Uppall, reinforcing his grip on the general classification, where he leads Joshua Tarling by 21 seconds and Ivan Romeo by 27 seconds.

Merlier received his stage winner's award from H.E. Aref Hamed Hareb and H.E. Dr. Mansoor Al Awar, marking another milestone in his UAE Tour success. The Belgian sprinter completed the 160-kilometer stage in 3 hours, 16 minutes, and 55 seconds, with Malucelli and Milan finishing in the same time.

With Pogacar maintaining his lead and the sprinters delivering thrilling finishes, the UAE Tour continues to showcase high-speed drama and tactical battles.
