Tim Merlier Claims Second Consecutive Paris-Nice Stage Win Amid Late Crash

Posted : 11 March 2025

Tim Merlier showcased his dominance in sprint finishes once again, securing his second consecutive stage victory at Paris-Nice on Monday. The Soudal Quick-Step rider overcame a late crash that momentarily trapped him 20 kilometers from the finish, recovering swiftly to rejoin the lead peloton.

With fewer rivals left in contention due to the chaotic finish, Merlier capitalized on the opportunity, extending his overall lead in the race designed as a mini Tour de France. The Belgian, who admitted to struggling with sleep after stage wins, described his triumph while wearing the leader's jersey as a particularly special moment.

Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard safely finished within the pack, remaining 20 seconds behind Merlier in the overall rankings due to time bonuses. The second stage, covering a flat 183.9km route from Montesson to Bellegarde, saw a major crash split the peloton, forcing retirements for Luke Durbridge and Gorka Sorarrain.

The incident allowed breakaway rider Jonas Abrahamsen to extend his solo effort before being caught just five kilometers from the finish, earning him the day’s combativity award. Several general classification hopefuls, including Mattias Skjelmose, Joao Almeida, and Ben O’Connor, were among those hindered by the crash.

The third stage, beginning at the Magny-Cours racing circuit, features a 28.4km team time trial with a newly introduced format. Instead of requiring teams to finish together, each rider will be credited with the time of their fastest teammate, encouraging aggressive riding from the strongest competitors. This format, set to debut in the Tour de France’s opening stage in Barcelona in 2026, is expected to shake up the standings.

The latter half of Paris-Nice will feature rolling hills before culminating in two decisive mountain stages in the Riviera backcountry, with the final showdown set to unfold on the legendary Col d'Eze before the race concludes in Nice.
