Fifteen-time major winner Tiger Woods will not compete at this year’s Open Championship after failing to submit an entry before the deadline, further extending his absence from competitive golf.
Woods has not appeared in a professional tournament since 2024 and was already ruled out of next month’s US Open due to eligibility requirements. However, the 50-year-old still qualified for the Open Championship through an exemption that remains valid until he turns 60.
Earlier this year, Woods had hinted at a possible return for the Masters, but those plans changed following a car crash in March that reportedly led to a DUI-related arrest. Soon after the incident, Woods announced he would step away from several responsibilities away from the course, including his work with the PGA Tour Policy Board and the Future Competition Committee. He also removed himself from consideration for the role of US Ryder Cup captain.
Injuries have continued to limit Woods’ playing career in recent years. Since suffering serious leg injuries in a 2021 car accident, he has undergone multiple medical procedures, including several back surgeries and a disk replacement operation last October.
Although widely regarded as one of golf’s greatest players, Woods has not won a tournament since his remarkable victory at the 2019 Masters. His last major triumph at the Open Championship came in 2006, adding to earlier wins in 2000 and 2005.
Meanwhile, fellow veteran Phil Mickelson has entered the Open Championship despite uncertainty surrounding his availability. Mickelson has missed several LIV Golf events this year due to an ongoing family health matter but is aiming to continue his long streak of appearances at the tournament, which he famously won in 2013.
