Tiger Woods Steps Away from Golf to Focus on Health After Traffic Incident

Posted : 01 April 2026

Tiger Woods announced he is stepping away from golf to focus on his health and well-being following a traffic accident on Jupiter Island, Florida. The 50-year-old golfing icon was arrested last Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence, though no injuries occurred. Woods passed a breathalyzer test but declined a urinalysis and later pleaded not guilty to DUI charges.

In a public statement, Woods acknowledged the gravity of the situation and emphasized the need to prioritize his health. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” he said. Woods added that he is committed to returning in a stronger, healthier, and more focused state, both personally and professionally.

While Woods had previously not ruled out participating in next week’s Masters after competing in a TGL indoor simulator event, the Masters website now lists him as a non-playing past champion. Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley expressed full support for Woods, stating that although he will not attend in person, his presence will be felt at the tournament. This likely means Woods will miss the Masters Champions Dinner.

The PGA Tour also voiced support for Woods, describing him as a legendary figure whose influence extends beyond his achievements on the course. “Above all else, Tiger is a person, and our focus is on his health and well-being,” the Tour said in a statement. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp reflected on Woods’ impact both on the sport and personally, praising his guidance and expressing respect for Woods’ decision to take time for recovery.

Woods, a 15-time major winner, has not competed at the PGA Tour level since the 2024 British Open. His last full tournament was the 2024 Masters, where he finished 60th. As he steps away, both the PGA Tour and Augusta National have reaffirmed their support for the golfing legend during this period of recovery.
