Tiger Woods remains uncertain for the 2026 Masters return despite TGL comeback

Posted : 25 March 2026

Tiger Woods has revealed he is "trying" to prepare his body for a return to Major competition at The Masters next month. The 50-year-old golf icon has been sidelined from the PGA Tour since July 2024, missing the 2025 edition of the tournament which was won by Rory McIlroy. While he remains listed in the field as a past champion, Woods has yet to officially confirm if he will compete at Augusta National.

The veteran recently made a competitive return in the TGL simulator league, representing Jupiter Links GC. Despite his team suffering a heavy 9-2 defeat to Los Angeles GC, Woods showed flashes of his trademark power by hitting two drives over 300 yards. Physically, the former world number one reported feeling "fine" after the short format match, though he noted that his body no longer recovers with the speed it once did.

The path to this comeback has been hindered by a grueling series of medical procedures over the last two years. Since his last Major appearance, Woods has undergone back surgery, treated a torn Achilles, and most recently had disk replacement surgery in October. These setbacks have restricted him to just 11 official tournament appearances in the five years following his 2021 car accident.

Speaking about his potential participation at Augusta, Woods emphasized his deep connection to the tournament. He stated that he intends to be at the venue regardless of his playing status to attend the annual Champions Dinner. However, his final decision on competing will depend on how his body responds to practice rounds at home over the coming weeks.

Woods currently holds five Green Jackets, trailing only Jack Nicklaus, who has six. His last victory at the historic venue came in 2019, but his recent history at the tournament has been physically demanding. He withdrew during the 2023 event due to foot pain and struggled to a career-worst professional Major round of 82 during the 2024 tournament.

Tournament organizers do not impose a strict deadline for past champions to commit to the field. This allows Woods maximum time to evaluate his stamina before the opening round begins on April 9. Fans and peers alike will be watching closely to see if the legendary golfer can add another chapter to his long history of injury comebacks.
