Tiger Woods is set to make his highly anticipated debut in the tech-infused indoor golf league, TGL, this Tuesday, bringing star power that is expected to boost viewership.
Last week, TGL’s launch match on ESPN drew 919,000 viewers, a number likely to rise with Woods participating, as it will be one of the rare opportunities to see him in competition.
While Woods's team, Jupiter Links Golf Club, was already scheduled for Tuesday's match, his official confirmation as a starter alongside Max Homa and Kevin Kisner came only last Friday.
The Jupiter Links team will face the Los Angeles Golf Club trio, including Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, and Sahith Theegala, in a nine-hole alternate shot format followed by a head-to-head round.
TGL's indoor setting, where matches are played over 15 holes on a playing surface similar in size to an American football field, offers Woods some relief from the injury struggles that have limited his appearances in recent years.
Despite not having competed in a PGA Tour event since the 2022 British Open, where he missed the cut, Woods will take the opening shot in the TGL match.
Woods's involvement in TGL, which he co-founded with Rory McIlroy in partnership with the PGA Tour, is part of a bid to revitalize the sport and attract a new generation of fans.
While the format, which features high-tech simulators and rotating greens, may not appeal to traditional golf purists, it provides a rare chance to see Woods in action.
Woods, who has undergone back surgery and skipped several events, is hopeful that the fast-paced nature of TGL will help expand the sport’s audience.
