Tiger Woods faces uphill battle at the Masters amid limited preparation, health concerns

Posted : 08 April 2024

Tiger Woods remains a central figure as the Masters approaches, despite being considered a longshot contender due to his limited competitive appearances and ongoing health issues. Following a truncated 2023 season and ankle surgery, Woods enters the tournament having played only 24 official holes of golf this year, with his last competitive round dating back to February.

Arriving at Augusta National with minimal competitive play is familiar territory for Woods, who made a remarkable comeback at the 2022 Masters after a severe car crash threatened his career. However, the toll of the demanding Augusta layout on his aging body – particularly his back and surgically repaired leg – raises questions about his ability to sustain his performance over multiple rounds.

ESPN analyst Curtis Strange highlights the uncertainty surrounding Woods' performance, acknowledging his capability to produce quality shots but questioning his endurance over the tournament's duration. Woods notably withdrew from last year's Masters due to plantar fasciitis and underwent ankle surgery soon after.

Despite the odds stacked against him, Woods draws confidence from his intimate knowledge of Augusta National, where he has never missed a cut as a professional and aims to extend his record streak of 24 consecutive made cuts. While victory may seem unlikely, merely making the cut and advancing to the weekend would be considered a significant achievement for the golfing legend.
