Tiger Woods Declines Ryder Cup Captaincy to Focus on Health After Crash

Tiger Woods has decided not to take on the role of United States Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 tournament in Ireland, according to the PGA of America. The decision comes shortly after the 50-year-old golfer was involved in a car accident in Florida, where he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, along with property damage and refusal to take a lawful test. He has pleaded not guilty through his legal representatives.

Following the incident, Woods announced he would step away from professional golf to focus on his health and undergo treatment. A judge has granted him permission to travel abroad for care, as his medical team has recommended an intensive and highly personalized rehabilitation program in a private setting away from public attention. His lawyer stated that such treatment could not be effectively carried out in the United States due to ongoing media scrutiny.

The PGA of America expressed support for Woods, praising his decision to prioritize his long-term well-being and acknowledging the difficulty of such a personal choice. The organization added that updates regarding the Ryder Cup captaincy will be provided at a later time.

Woods has represented the United States in the Ryder Cup eight times between 1997 and 2018, with his only victory coming in 1999. The 2027 edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place at Adare Manor from September 17 to 19. Meanwhile, Europe will be led by Luke Donald, whose captaincy for a third term was recently confirmed.

Authorities reported that Woods appeared impaired at the scene of the crash, noting physical signs such as lethargy and dilated pupils. Two pills identified as hydrocodone, a pain-relief opioid, were also found in his possession. The golfer has a history of injuries and surgeries following a serious accident in 2021, which has limited his appearances in recent seasons.
