Three Nigerian Cricket Players Claim Top Individual Awards at Kwibuka T20

Posted : 22 June 2026

Nigeria's senior women's cricket team concluded their campaign at the 2026 Kwibuka Women's T20 Tournament in Kigali with outstanding individual milestones. Despite missing out on the championship trophy, the Female Yellow Greens produced notable individual performances that dominated the tournament's closing ceremony. Three Nigerian players secured prestigious honors to highlight the country's rising profile in continental cricket.

Christabel Chukwuonye was officially named the Best Bowler of the competition following an exceptional series of spells with the ball. The talented bowler finished as the tournament's highest wicket-taker after capturing 17 wickets across the multi-nation event. Her consistency anchored the team's defensive strategy and constantly dismantled the batting lineups of opposing nations.

Vice-captain Etim Sarah Ekwere also earned individual recognition by clinching the Best Fielder award for her outstanding efforts. Ekwere's incredible athleticism and sharp reflexes behind the stumps provided a massive lift to the West African side. Her disciplined glovework prevented crucial runs and gave the team a competitive edge during tight fielding sessions.

The individual accolades capped off a dramatic tournament that saw Nigeria finish on the podium with a bronze medal. The Female Yellow Greens secured third place after defeating Brazil Women by two wickets at the Gahanga International Stadium. After electing to field, the team restricted their South American opponents to a modest total of 85 runs.

Nigeria chased down the target in 19.2 overs with just four balls remaining in a tense encounter. Adeshola Adekunle anchored the tricky run chase with a vital contribution of 26 runs to steady the innings. Captain Favour Eseigbe then added an unbeaten 19 runs to guide the team safely over the finish line.

Chukwuonye also won the Player of the Match award during the bronze medal playoff for her remarkable bowling performance. She claimed three wickets for just 13 runs, including a rare maiden over that stifled the Brazilian batters. Oseyande Omonkhobhio, Shola Adekunle, and Rachael Samson also picked up two wickets each to sustain the bowling pressure.

Skipper Favour Eseigbe praised the overall squad depth and commended her teammates for bouncing back from earlier setbacks. She noted that the players showed high momentum and character after losing four matches prior to the playoff. The team chose to give a final push to ensure they did not leave Rwanda empty-handed.

Head Coach Theophilus Ibodeme expressed satisfaction with the progress of the team throughout the tournament. He emphasized that the international exposure will aid their preparations for upcoming regional and global cricket competitions. The tournament concluded with Zimbabwe XI claiming the ultimate trophy while host nation Rwanda finished as runners-up.
