Thomas Detry Triumphs in Phoenix Open, Claiming First PGA Tour Victory

Posted : 10 February 2025

Thomas Detry clinched his first PGA Tour victory at the Phoenix Open with a brilliant six-under-par 65 on Sunday, finishing seven strokes ahead of the competition for a 24-under total of 260. His impressive performance made him the first Belgian to win a PGA Tour title. Detry, who had two runner-up finishes in his previous 65 starts, expressed his excitement, saying, "It's incredible. It's what dreams are made of."

Despite challenges from several big names, including three-time major winner Jordan Spieth and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Detry maintained his composure throughout the round. American Daniel Berger came closest to catching Detry, briefly closing the gap to two strokes before a bogey at the par-three 16th derailed his progress. Berger finished tied for second with Michael Kim, both at 267, after recording four-under 67s.

Detry started the day with two birdies and a bogey in his first three holes but turned on the style with a sensational back nine. After birdies on holes 11, 15, and 16, he secured his victory with a stunning 21-footer on 17 and a 10-foot birdie at the 18th. Reflecting on his performance, he said, "Considering the circumstances, one of the best shots of the week and of my life, definitely."

While Detry was celebrating his triumph, Spieth and Scheffler also had notable performances. Spieth, in his second start since wrist surgery, finished tied for fourth with Christiaan Bezuidenhout, both at 268. Meanwhile, Scheffler, recovering from a hand injury, showed early promise but faded after a string of bogeys, ending the day with a double-bogey at the last.
