Teen Sensation Ekunke Crowns Remarkable Rise with Historic FIDE World Amateur Rapid Title

Fourteen-year-old Nigerian chess sensation Ekunke Odey Goodness announced himself on the world stage after defeating a field of experienced players to win the maiden FIDE World Amateur Rapid Chess Championship in Abuja.

The teenage prodigy delivered an outstanding performance over 11 rounds, scoring nine points from a possible 11 to claim the historic title at the inaugural championship organised by FIDE in partnership with the Nigeria Chess Federation.

Ekunke sealed victory by drawing his final-round encounter against fellow Nigerian FIDE Master Eugene Ekpoikong Unwana, a result that guaranteed him the championship. Unwana finished second with 8½ points, while FM Bomo Lovet Kigigha also amassed 8½ points but settled for third place on tie-break.

Played under a rapid time control of 15 minutes with a 10-second increment per move, the tournament featured fierce competition among top Nigerian players and a strong international cast.

One of the championship's biggest surprises came from 17-year-old Sambo Joseph, who briefly threatened Ekunke's march to the title. Sambo defeated the eventual champion in Round Eight after earlier overcoming Ekunke's coach, FM Bomo Kigigha, and strengthened his challenge with victory over India's AIM Sahil Sanjay Shejal in Round Nine.

However, defeats to Eugene Unwana and Lanre Seye Oluwalasinu in the closing rounds ended his title hopes, leaving him fourth with 7½ points.

Unwana mounted a late charge after defeating Kigigha in Round Nine and Sambo in Round 10, setting up a winner-takes-all final-round showdown with Ekunke. The teenager, however, displayed remarkable composure to secure the draw he needed and make history as the first-ever winner of the championship.

The event also showcased growing international participation, with India's AIM Sahil Sanjay Shejal finishing fifth on 7½ points, while compatriots AFM Aryan Raj, CM Pankaj Sharma, and AIM Aditya Dinkar all ended among the top 10. Cameroon's Noumbo Vidal also featured prominently.

With the rapid championship concluded, attention now turns to the FIDE World Amateur Blitz Chess Championship, where players will battle for another world title as the global chess festival continues in Abuja.

Ekunke's triumph marks another significant milestone for Nigerian chess and highlights the country's growing pool of young talent capable of excelling on the international stage. He will now look to build on his success as the focus shifts to the blitz competition.
