Team Nigeria’s Taekwondo contingent impressed at the ANOCA Zone III Games in Ouagadougou

Team Nigeria recorded an impressive outing at the ANOCA Zone III Games in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, claiming two silver medals in the Taekwondo event. The performance marks a strong showing for the country’s young athletes as they continue their push for more medals in the ongoing competition.

Nigeria’s rising star, Awoniyi Mubarak, made a brilliant international debut, winning a silver medal in the -68kg category. The national champion, who won gold in the -63kg class at the last National Sports Festival in Ogun State, showcased remarkable skill and composure throughout the tournament.

Mubarak defeated his opponent from Benin Republic 2-0 in the quarterfinals and overcame his Ghanaian rival 2-1 in the semifinals before narrowly losing 2-1 to host nation Burkina Faso in a thrilling final at the Stade du Aout 4 Indoor Sports Hall.

In the -80kg category, Daniel Chukwudi added another silver medal to Nigeria’s tally despite sustaining an injury during his semifinal bout against Benin Republic. The resilient fighter battled through the pain to reach the final but was edged out by his Burkinabe opponent.

Head Coach Yahuza Ibrahim expressed pride in the team’s performance, describing the competition as a valuable opportunity for Nigeria’s emerging talents to gain international exposure.

“I’m very impressed with our performance. This tournament was aimed at testing some of our grassroots athletes recently discovered by the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation. Winning medals at this level shows our developmental programs are yielding results,” Ibrahim said.

He explained that the decision to field newly discovered athletes was deliberate, with the goal of preparing them for future international competitions. Ibrahim, who has previously produced Olympic athlete Isah Adams and other international Taekwondo stars, also commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) for their support in providing such platforms for consistent competition.

Team Nigeria is currently competing in four sports at the ANOCA Zone III Games — Badminton, Weightlifting, Wrestling, and Taekwondo — with hopes of adding more medals to their growing tally before the tournament concludes.
