Team Nigeria continued its strong showing at the ongoing 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh by winning two additional gold medals in Wrestling and Athletics. The victories come as the nation’s athletes aim to maintain their dominance across multiple disciplines.
In the 53kg freestyle Wrestling final, Christiana Ogunsanya convincingly defeated Uzbekistan’s Shokhida Akhmedova 11-1 to secure the gold medal. Later in the evening, Nigeria’s women’s 4x100 metres relay team—comprising Bada Toyin, Ezechukwu Miracle, Omokwe Maria, and Nweke Cynthia—claimed gold with an impressive finish in 44.27 seconds, edging out Bahrain (44.47s) and Gambia (45.05s).
In addition to the golds, Nigeria also secured two silver and three bronze medals. Kure Samuel Adams earned bronze in the men’s javelin throw, while Badmus Atanda took bronze in the men’s 400m. Patience Okon George won silver in the women’s 400m behind her Bahraini competitor. In the men’s 4x100m relay, the team of John Caleb, Chidera Ezeakor, Ezekiel Asuquo, and James Taiwo Emmanuel secured the bronze medal.
In Wrestling, Miesinnei Genesis narrowly missed gold in the women’s 50kg freestyle final, losing 5-1 to Aktenge Keunimjaeva of Uzbekistan and claiming silver.
Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, who was present at the events, commended the athletes for their dedication and performance. “I am truly proud of both of you. Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Nigeria will continue to expose athletes to top-tier international competitions for podium success,” Olopade said. He further noted that the National Sports Commission, under Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, is committed to ensuring that Nigerian sports maintain a positive global presence.
With these wins, Team Nigeria’s medal count now stands at eight golds, ten silvers, and seven bronzes, with more medals expected in Para athletics and Para-powerlifting events.
