Team Nigeria wrapped up its badminton campaign at the maiden African School Games in Algeria on Thursday with an impressive haul of six medals: two gold, three silver, and one bronze.
Nigeria’s first gold medal came courtesy of Precious Adekunle, who showcased speed, skill, and tactical brilliance to defeat her Egyptian opponent in the girls’ singles final. Edun Damilare added a second gold after a gritty performance in the boys’ singles, overcoming a tough challenge in a tense final match.
In the girls’ doubles final, the Adekunle sisters, Precious and Cynthia, put on a strong showing but had to settle for silver after a narrow loss. Another silver came in the mixed doubles, where Edun David and Cynthia Adekunle impressed despite finishing as runners-up.
In the mixed team event, Nigeria faced Tunisia in a closely contested semifinal. Ahmed Ayatulla won his boys' match 3-1, but Tunisia took the girls’ match 3-0 against Masibau Faisat and clinched the doubles 3-1, giving them a 2-1 overall win and leaving Nigeria with a bronze medal.
Overall, Team Nigeria has now won eight medals across four sports at the Games, comprising two gold, four silver, and two bronze. The focus now shifts to athletics, which begins on Friday.
Fifty-three countries are participating in the inaugural African School Games, which started on July 26 and will run until August 5.
