Team Nigeria wins 2026 African U-18 Beach Volleyball Development Cup

Posted : 14 August 2026

Nigeria’s Joy Lawrence and Ifechukwu Odoh have emerged champions of the 2026 African U-18 Beach Volleyball Development Cup after a commanding 2-0 victory over hosts Senegal A on Thursday in Senegal.

The Nigerian pair produced a dominant performance in the final, cruising to a 21-8, 21-10 victory to cap an impressive campaign at the developmental tournament.

Lawrence and Odoh wasted no time establishing their authority in the opening set, combining effective attacks with disciplined defensive play to leave the Senegalese duo struggling to keep pace.

Nigeria maintained its composure throughout the set and wrapped it up 21-8.

Although Senegal A returned for the second set with greater determination and the backing of the home crowd, the Nigerian duo remained firmly in control.

Lawrence and Odoh continued to dictate the tempo, executing their plays with confidence before sealing the championship with another convincing 21-10 set victory.

The triumph delighted Nigeria’s coach, John Iwerima, who praised the players for their resilience and fighting spirit throughout the competition.

The former international also expressed appreciation to the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) for its support in ensuring the team participated in the tournament.

“The players showed great resilience and determination throughout the competition. This victory is a clear indication that Nigeria has one of the best developmental programmes in Africa,” Iwerima said.

He added that the experience gained in Senegal would provide valuable exposure for the young players as they continue their progression in beach volleyball.

NVBF President, Engineer Musa Nimrod, also congratulated the players and coaching crew, describing the success as an encouraging indication of the future of beach volleyball in Nigeria.

Nimrod stressed the importance of sustained investment in age-grade competitions, noting that such programmes would help Nigeria produce stronger senior teams.

“The future of beach volleyball in Nigeria is very bright. We will continue to focus on underage competitions because that is how we can build stronger senior women’s teams for the future,” he said.
