Team Nigeria finished top of the medals table with 28 gold, 35 silver, and 38 bronze medals at the just-concluded two-day 14th African Arm Wrestling and 7th Para Arm Wrestling Championship held in Abuja.
The Republic of Benin secured second place with 23 gold, 30 silver, and 11 bronze medals, while Ghana finished third with 21 gold, 20 silver, and nine bronze medals.
Speaking after the event, President of the Nigerian Arm Wrestling Federation, Samuel Olatunji, expressed delight at Team Nigeria’s performance.
“First of all, I am elated with the standard of the event, the ambience, the performance by the athletes, and as a former athlete, I am happy that we were able to pull through.
“Team Nigeria made us proud. This is a competition involving 20 countries, and to amass the number of points we did shows that we are improving as a federation and as a sport,” he said.
Olatunji added that the championship would serve as good preparation for the 2027 African Games qualifiers scheduled to hold in Accra next year.
