Team Nigeria Targets Historic Medal Haul at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Posted : 04 July 2026

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has expressed strong confidence that Team Nigeria can win between 16 and 20 gold medals at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, citing months of strategic planning and comprehensive athlete preparation.

Speaking during the official unveiling of Puma as the official apparel partner for Team Nigeria in Abuja, NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, said the country's ambitious medal target was based on deliberate investment in talent identification, athlete development, and sustained preparation.

According to Dikko, preparations for the Games began well ahead of schedule, with the commission implementing a structured programme to identify, develop, and monitor athletes expected to represent the country.

He disclosed that Team Nigeria would travel to Glasgow about 20 days before the opening ceremony to acclimatise and fine-tune preparations ahead of the competition.

Dikko assured athletes of continued support throughout the Games, expressing confidence that the quality of Nigeria's contingent would translate into a successful outing.

Also speaking, NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade said the medal projection was not based on optimism alone but on months of hard work, careful planning, and effective coordination.

He stressed that the commission had created a culture built on discipline, sacrifice, and professionalism, adding that no athlete would be allowed to undermine the team's collective ambition.

Olopade warned that acts of indiscipline or conduct capable of bringing Team Nigeria into disrepute would attract appropriate sanctions, while urging athletes to channel grievances through established internal mechanisms rather than social media.

The Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, also expressed optimism over the team's chances, describing the current level of preparation as one of the best in recent years.

Shaibu said the athletes had been provided with the necessary resources to compete effectively and urged them to repay the confidence reposed in them by delivering medals for the country.

He further revealed that the NIS had intensified grassroots sports development initiatives aimed at discovering and nurturing the next generation of Nigerian sporting talent to sustain the country's competitiveness at major international events.

With extensive preparations already underway and officials expressing confidence in the team's readiness, Team Nigeria will be aiming to achieve one of its most successful Commonwealth Games campaigns when the competition gets underway in Glasgow.
