Riyadh 2025: Nigerian Athletes Shine at Islamic Solidarity Games

Posted : 20 November 2025

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has lauded the outstanding performance of Nigerian athletes at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Olopade highlighted that many competitors, particularly those making their debut at a major international event, have surpassed expectations.

“The Islamic Games have provided an excellent platform to showcase and nurture our athletes, and we are taking full advantage of it,” Olopade said. He emphasized that the mission extends beyond winning medals, noting that the primary goal is to offer opportunities for talents identified at the National Sports Festival and to create a developmental pathway for junior athletes advancing toward national and international recognition.

Olopade also pointed to the commission’s strategic plan for revitalizing Nigerian sports, noting that it enjoys the full support of the President. “There will be a gradual shift in how our athletes view the country. The President has continually backed every initiative aimed at empowering the sports sector,” he added.

Commending the dedication of the athletes, Olopade singled out Obiageri Pamela Amaechi, Chioma Chukwujindu ‘CiCi’ Onyekwere, Elizabeth Anyanacho, and the rest of the team for their unwavering commitment. “These athletes continue to give their best whenever called upon, even though this competition falls outside their regular season,” he said.

He further stressed that while Nigeria is not yet at its desired level in sports, efforts are underway to change the narrative. “We are focusing on key details—proper kitting to eliminate any sense of inferiority, timely payment of bonuses, and a special package for elite athletes next year. Better days are ahead, and we encourage our athletes to keep the faith,” Olopade concluded.
