Team Nigeria shines as Oluwafemiayo, Ferdinand rewrite world records in Glasgow

Team Nigeria's para powerlifting team delivered a spectacular performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday, claiming two world records and four medals to announce the country's arrival in style.

Leading the charge was Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who retained her status as the world's dominant para powerlifter by breaking her own world record twice before securing the gold medal in the women's heavyweight event.

Oluwafemiayo first lifted 172kg to surpass her previous world mark before raising the bar again with a remarkable 175kg effort on her third and final attempt.

The record-breaking lift earned her 134.8 points and the gold medal, further cementing her legacy as one of the greatest athletes in the sport.

Nigeria's Rita Ferdinand also etched her name into the history books after lifting 158kg to establish a new world record in her weight category.

Her impressive performance earned 128.2 points and the silver medal, finishing behind compatriot Oluwafemiayo to complete a memorable Nigerian one-two finish.

Earlier in the competition, Esther Nwogu claimed gold in the women's lightweight para powerlifting event, while Esther Onyema secured the silver medal in the same category.

Roland Ezuruike added another silver medal in the men's lightweight competition to further boost Nigeria's tally.

The record-breaking displays and medal-winning performances gave Team Nigeria an outstanding start to its campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, underlining the country's strength in para powerlifting.

With multiple medals and two world records achieved on the opening day, Team Nigeria has laid down an early marker in the competition. The outstanding performances highlighted the nation's continued dominance in para powerlifting on the international stage.
