Maiden West Africa Para Games: Team Nigeria Tops Medals Table

Posted : 02 December 2025

Team Nigeria’s para-athletes at the ongoing 1st West Africa Para Games in Abeokuta are determined to dominate the competition, maintaining their lead atop the medals table. The athletes have shown no signs of slowing down as they aim to bring home even more championships for the host nation.

The theme of this year’s championship, Heroes Call, appears to have inspired the Nigerian athletes, who continue to excel across multiple sports and events. Nigeria currently leads the medals table with a total of 25 medals: 9 gold, 11 silver, and 5 bronze.

Benin Republic follows with 2 gold and 6 bronze medals, while Côte d’Ivoire is in third place with 1 gold medal. Ghana sits fourth with 1 silver and 5 bronze medals. Other participating countries, including Cameroon, Liberia, Niger, and Togo, are yet to secure a medal.

Team Nigeria now aims to sweep the men’s and mixed wheelchair basketball events at the Alake Sports Centre in Ijebu. The Nigerian women’s wheelchair basketball team, led by Gbemisola Ejubamigbe, proved too strong for their opponents, defeating Ghana 13-2 to claim the gold medal in Monday’s final.

Exciting fixtures continue in the mixed round-robin stage, with Nigeria facing Ghana, Benin taking on Niger Republic, and other key matches including Nigeria vs. Niger and Benin vs. Nigeria in the men’s event. Fans can expect high-intensity action as the competition moves forward.
