Team Nigeria Heads to Egypt for Inaugural IFAF Africa Games

Posted : 19 June 2025

The Nigerian American Football Association (NAFA) has officially unveiled the team’s competition apparel to the National Sports Commission (NSC) in preparation for the inaugural IFAF Africa Flag Football Continental Games in Egypt, taking place from June 20–21, 2025. The presentation ceremony, held in Abuja, featured NAFA President Babajide Akeredolu handing over the national jerseys to Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC.

In his remarks, Olopade encouraged the athletes to give their best and bring pride to the country. “On this trip to Egypt, I wish you all the best. I am especially encouraged by the confidence that our women’s team will win gold,” he said. He also praised NAFA’s decision to include an Under-13 team, highlighting its alignment with the Commission’s “Renewed Hope” vision of youth sports development.

The NSC DG commended NAFA’s active promotion of flag football in Nigeria and noted the potential for future collaboration with private sector players such as Showtime. “If that synergy comes together, this sport could take Nigeria by storm, I have no doubt,” he said, emphasizing the sport's potential for national growth.

NAFA President Babajide Akeredolu elaborated on the significance of the upcoming continental competition, stating that the event marks a historic step in giving Africa stronger global representation. “Since flag football became an Olympic sport, there has been a strong push to host continental games. After much collaboration with the global body, we now have our first African Games,” he explained. Nigeria will be represented by three teams: a main team that has been in camp for two months, a women’s team, and an Under-13 team.

Expressing confidence in the team’s readiness, Akeredolu credited local leagues such as the Abuja Flag Football League, Showtime, the Community Flag Football League, and the Ogun Flag Football League for nurturing talents. “These platforms have produced strong players capable of forming a formidable national team,” he said. Team Nigeria will compete against top African nations including Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa, Senegal, Ghana, Uganda, and host Egypt in this historic tournament.
