Team Nigeria Finishes Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship with 29 Medals

The Nigeria weightlifting team to the 2026 Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship on Saturday rounded off their participation, winning five additional medals.

The contingent of 10 athletes and three officials stamped Nigeria's dominance on the continent, winning a record 29 medals overall—14 gold, 13 silver, and 2 bronze.

Mary Osijo, who competed in the 79kg women's category on Friday, won three silver medals, while Lucky Joseph, who competed in the +110kg men's class on Saturday, won two bronze medals.

Osijo lifted 95kg in the snatch and 116kg in the clean and jerk, with a total of 211kg to win all three medals at stake.

On his part, Lucky Joseph lifted 145kg in the snatch and 170kg in the clean and jerk, with a total of 315kg to win two bronze medals.

The Nigerian female lifters emerged 3rd on the continent after winning 12 gold and 6 silver medals.

The 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships in Ismailia, Egypt, which started on May 10th, will end today, May 17th, 2026.

Nigeria's contingent is expected to return to the country on Monday, May 18.
