Team Nigeria eyes World Cup tickets, continental honours at African Chess Championships

Posted : 09 June 2026

Nigeria will be aiming to reinforce its growing reputation as one of Africa's emerging chess powers when a seven-member contingent competes at the 2026 African Individual Chess Championships in Botswana from June 18 to 27.

The prestigious tournament, scheduled to hold at the Debswana Jwaneng Mine, will bring together some of the continent's strongest chess players in a battle for continental supremacy and coveted qualification spots for the FIDE Chess World Cup.

The Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF) has assembled a blend of experienced campaigners and rising talents for the championship. In the men's category, Abdulrahmam Abdulraheem Akintoye, Odion Aikhoje, Adeyinka Adewole, Paul Eloka, and Tennyson Ewomazino Olisa will carry the nation's hopes, while Ofowino Toritsemuwa and Bridget Michael will represent Nigeria in the women's section.

NCF Vice President Adeyinka Adewole is expected to lead the delegation to Botswana and will also compete in the tournament.

With qualification to the FIDE Chess World Cup at stake, the Nigerian players face a demanding challenge against a field expected to feature Grandmasters, International Masters, and several of Africa's top-ranked competitors.

The championship has attracted entries from 25 countries, according to the Botswana Chess Federation (BCF), making it one of the most competitive editions in recent history. The event also carries added significance as it coincides with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the African Chess Confederation (ACC).

For Team Nigeria, the competition offers an opportunity not only to challenge for medals but also to demonstrate the country's steady progress in the development of chess across the continent.

Botswana is hosting the African Individual Chess Championships for the first time, with organizers describing the event as Africa's premier individual chess competition.

As the countdown to the tournament continues, Nigeria's representatives will be determined to make their mark, secure valuable World Cup qualification spots, and bring continental honours back home.

The 2026 African Individual Chess Championships represent a vital proving ground for the nation's finest minds to assert themselves on the international stage. Facing elite competition from across 25 countries will test the tactical depth of both the experienced masters and rising stars in the squad. Ultimate success in Botswana will not only secure prestigious global tournament berths but also solidify Nigeria's standing as a dominant force in African chess.
