Team Nigeria Departs Aberdeen for Glasgow Ahead of Commonwealth Games

Posted : 20 July 2026

Team Nigeria will depart its pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, for Glasgow on Tuesday as the country's athletes begin the final phase of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Director-General of the Commission, Kola Daniel.

According to the NSC, the first batch of athletes and officials will move into Glasgow ahead of the opening ceremony, while the second group is scheduled to arrive at the Games Village on Friday, July 24, to join teammates already in camp.

The phased movement follows several weeks of intensive training and acclimatisation in Aberdeen. The camp was designed to help Nigerian athletes adjust to the weather conditions and complete their technical preparations before competition begins.

The commission said Team Nigeria has received comprehensive technical, medical and welfare support throughout the training programme to ensure the athletes arrive in Glasgow in peak condition.

Nigeria will compete across several sports during the Games and is expected to challenge for medals in events where its athletes have recently excelled at continental and international competitions. The country's delegation will be aiming to improve on previous Commonwealth Games performances with a blend of experienced stars and emerging talents.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland. Around 3,000 athletes representing 74 Commonwealth Games Associations will compete for 215 gold medals across 11 sports during the multi-sport event.

Scotland will host the Commonwealth Games for the fourth time. The country previously staged the Games in Edinburgh in 1970 and 1986 before Glasgow successfully hosted the event in 2014.

The NSC expressed confidence in the readiness of the Nigerian contingent, stating that the athletes have prepared thoroughly and are determined to represent the country with distinction throughout the competition.

Team Nigeria will now shift its focus from training to competition as the countdown to the opening events in Glasgow enters its final days.
