Team Edo Strengthens Dominance at 2nd NDGs with Medal Rush

Host state Edo continued to assert dominance at the ongoing second edition of the Niger Delta Games in Benin City, delivering an impressive medal haul across athletics, para powerlifting, taekwondo, chess, and handball.

Team Edo’s women’s basketball side maintained their fine form, edging Delta 20–18 on Day Two to book a place in the quarter-finals. The hosts had earlier thrashed Abia 47–6 in their opening fixture.

On the track, Osawe Salami impressed in the men’s 400m hurdles, clocking 51.73 seconds, while Solomon Okundaye powered to gold in the men’s 800m final with a time of 1:56.34.

In the field events, Rebecca Njoku struck gold in the women’s hammer with a 30.20m throw. Emmanuel Chakamumudu added to Edo’s tally, winning the men’s hammer at 41.57m ahead of Delta’s David Bosa (silver) and Rivers’ Goodnews Musa (bronze). Chakamumudu had earlier claimed gold in the shot put.

Para powerlifter Nicholas Ojomah secured gold in the 72kg category, finishing ahead of competitors from Abia and Imo. Favour Imasuen contributed a silver medal in the women’s hammer with a 24.60m effort.

In taekwondo, Emmanuel Ogbevoen captured gold in the men’s 68kg division after a commanding performance.

The medal surge extended to chess. In the male rapid event, Rivers State’s Nwachukwu John claimed gold, with Edo’s Osayande Kingsley earning silver and Henry Oghogho taking bronze.

Team Edo’s Omoruyi Sandra Osarugue triumphed in the female rapid category, while Abia’s Nwankwo Michelle Chiamaka won silver and Cross River’s Effiom Esther Erin secured bronze.

In handball, Team Edo’s male side recorded a convincing 25–17 victory over Rivers State. Blessing Osagiede Abies also progressed to the quarter-finals in the women’s 67kg category.

With consistent podium finishes across multiple disciplines, Team Edo remains one of the standout performers of the Games.
